BHUTAN The Land of the Thunder Dragon April, 2009 September, 2009 |
||
The West always "knew" Eastern Europe as the zone behind the Iron Country.
The national identities were completely ignored. And still we were so different.
Albania is probably the least known of all, with its political isolation that kept all
the Albanians in and all the foreigners out.
This spring we will take you to the new democracy of Albania
to see a vibrant country that opened to the world. |
Bhutan is probably one of the last places in the world where you can still find untouched beauty and supreme happiness. Incidentally, annual survey are done to determine the happiness level of the Bhutanese citizens. Join us and decide for yourself! | ||||

From Dracula to Ceausescu September 2009 |
||
| Somebody once said that the "rich traditions of one's native land can be truly appreciated only by those who left it a long time ago." I left Romania during Ceausescu's regime in 1975. And this year I will take you back in time to a celebration of Romanian traditions, folk art and history in some of the most beautiful lands of Eastern Europe. | A history tour from Bucharest to Transylvania where Dracula's myth has become "history" while Ceausescu's reality has faded into nostalgia. We travel through Walachia and Transylvania. | ||||

Miorita September 2009 |

| Romania has been recently accepted in the European Union. Travel through this "new European" country and meet the people who matter - entrepreneurs, students, artisans - who have mixed emotions about this transition to a free society. While the young generation is striving in the new technology, their parents try to adjust gracefully to a vibrant marker after 50 years of communist inertia. And the grandparents on a fixed minimal income are nostalgic about the "security" of the past. The cities welcome the change while the villages decry their loss of traditions under the new rules. We travel through Walachia, Transylvania, Moldova. | To discover the living traditions of Romania, we follow the path of an extraordinary company Aid for Artisans, a non-profit organization who documented the folk art of my country with impressive love and understanding. Their book published in 1999 is an homage to the artisans of this Old Europe - carpet weavers, ceramics makers, painters, wood carvers. And we will meet them and visit their workshops through the regions of Oltenia, Transylvania and Moldova. A donation is made on your behalf to Aid for Artisans www.aid2artisans.org. | ||||

Silk and Spices Spring 2009 |
||
| Walking through the ancient, otherworldly landscape of Cappadocia, we discover the Byzantine art of the rock churches and the hidden underground city of Derinkuyu, where miles of tunnels once housed 20,000 people. A dawn balloon ride will take us over the lunar images of Goreme, Urgup and Avanos, a land forgotten by time. | After September 11, 2001 the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan became a major ally in the U. S "war against terror." The country has a strategic location for the fight against Taliban It also has a most appalling record on human rights and democracy reforms in the decade since its independence. A factor that can make the "transition to democracy" and our alliance rather uneasy. To "understand hearts and minds," we will travel along the ancient Silk Route from Tashkent to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva and across the border to Ashkabat, and the Unesco Sites of Merv and Mary. We will meet and exchange ideas with university students , professors, art curators, journalists and entrepreneurs. Join us for an intelligent dialogue with the new Central Asia peoples. |
