ALBANIA Albania Revisited |

BHUTAN The Land of the Thunder Dragon |
||
The West always "knew" Eastern Europe as the zone behind the Iron Country.
The national identities were completely ignored. And still we were so different.
Albania is probably the least known of all, with its political isolation that kept all
the Albanians in and all the foreigners out.
This spring we will take you to the new democracy of Albania
to see a vibrant country that opened to the world. |
Bhutan is probably one of the last places in the world where you can still find untouched beauty and supreme happiness. Incidentally, annual survey are done to determine the happiness level of the Bhutanese citizens. Join us and decide for yourself!

We invite you to immerse yourself in the ancient histories, visual wonders
and mesmerizing cultures of South East Asia. From Hanoi to Phnom Penh and Vientiane,
we explore the region's most intriguing cities, while meeting their citizens,
artisans writers and newsmakers. Margaret Shepherd an accomplished Boston artist and a member of St.Batolph Club leads us into this discovery tour of Indochina - a region of exotic beauty that will forever fascinate and intrigue. |
Cubans do everything with passion. You will find the same intensity in their love for the island as in their desire to
leave it. Their revolution was deeply passionate; so are their music, chess and
baseball games. The only heartless statement seems to be the one seen en route to
the airport, on a lonely portrait of Fidel - "Socialismo o Muerte."
The thought of my returning to a totalitarian regime was frightening and
I tried to reason - "it cannot be as bad as in Romania" - after all Cuba has
private restaurants and jazz clubs, and its communism seemed "tropical" compared to the
Eastern European version. |

France must be the perfect destination for a sophisticated traveler.
The country has everything - natural beauty, impressive history and culture,
and a cuisine to die for. From Paris, to Lyon to Provence and Nice...
Antoine de Saint Exupery wrote the perfect note: One can really see only with his heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes.
And France is just that - |
History and heritage in combination with character and charm - Ireland is a place like no other. We had the chance to explore this intimate land of stonewalled fields, thatched-roof cottages, and towering medieval Castles in a special tour hosted by NPR's Jackie Lydon and Michael Goldfarb of BBC. |

Hidden Cities of Antiquity |

Our trips to Italy were as enchanting as the country itself. And the travel experiences were wildly different.
We walked through Tuscany, rode bicycles through Umbria, shopped in Venice markets and
cooked with Marcela Hazan at Cipriani. Enjoyed the sea on an old |
The classical remains of Libya are amongst the finest and yet the least known in the world. While the Western part of the country was colonized by the Phoenicians, the east coast welcomed the Greeks. These crossroads of sea and land have witnessed the ancient commerce of goods and wares, slaves, grains, wild animals, ivory and the mysterious silphium - the healing plant used even by Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, the wife of Caesar and Marc Anthony... After the Punic Wars, when Libya fell under the Roman control, the country was divided into Tripolitania (to the West) and Cyrenaica (to the East) We are going to visit both. The Roman cities of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. And the Greek cities of Cyrene and Apollonia. Going even further south to reach the desert town of Ghadames, belonging to the UNESCO world patrimony. Join us for this discovery of Libya !! |

Somebody once said that the rich traditions of one's native land can be truly appreciated only by those who left it a long time ago.
I left Romania during Ceausescu's communist regime. After its demise
in 1989 I was able to return and organize discovery tours to Our groups are always small, allowing as such for flexibility and creativity in the itinerary. En route we meet artisans, peasants, priests, students and teachers. We are invited at weddings and gypsy fairs, shop in village markets, enjoy alfresco picnics, attend classical concerts in churches, overnight in monasteries, visit art collections in private homes... Always traveling as friends having a good time, not as tourists following an umbrella. |
The first time I went to Russia was in the winter of 1986. It was still the Soviet Union then.
The grim Prebaltiskaya Hotel, was the best venue in town. The passports were kept at the
reception and all hotel floors were monitored by a It seems that only the Neva River and the legendary White Nights have kept their beauty untouched. |

VIETNAM
Discover Vietnam |
||
After September 11, 2001 the former
Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan became a major ally in the
U. S "war against terror." The country has a strategic
location for the fight against Taliban It also has a most appalling record on
human rights and democracy reforms in the decade since its
independence. A factor that can make the "transition to democracy" and our alliance rather uneasy. To "understand hearts and minds," we will travel along the ancient Silk Route from Tashkent to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva and across the border to Ashkabat, and the Unesco Sites of Merv and Mary. We will meet and exchange ideas with university students , professors, art curators, journalists and entrepreneurs. Join us for an intelligent dialogue with the new Central Asia peoples. |
Discover Vietnam, its beauty, art and history. Travelling from Hanoi, to Sapa Valley, Halong Bay, Hue and Saigon. En route we meet people who matter - historians, art curators, journalists. Our small group will be escorted by Cong Tran and Roxana von Kraus.
